Angel Playhouse: Linus Poon Master’s Recital

As apart of a Masters Recital, Clarinetist Linus Poon will be premiering Coney Tales for Clarinet and Piano. In partial fulfillment of a Master's Degree in Clarinet Performance, Linus Poon presents his first graduate recital, Angel Playhouse. This recital will feature solo works by Elliott Carter, Stephen Gryc, Paul Hindemith, Clara Schumann, alongside the world premiere of Coney Tales by Rj Dion. Linus Poon is a student of Ayako Oshima-Neidich.

Coney Tales (2024) was commissioned by Linus Poon for a Master's Recital premiered at the Hartt School of Music Spring 2025. When developing the concept of the piece, the idea of composing an elegy while depicting the normal day of a family pet became an exciting balancing act. Coney Tales utilizes a more open-ended and improvisatory feel while depicting the slow-moving times of a day. Following the melancholic opening, there is a surge to reference the bursts of energy pets normally have.

Commissioners’ Note: My pet rabbit, Dave, came into my life in the same year I began playing the clarinet. A once-shy, timid bunny quickly became a wandering ball of adrenaline and curiosity, with a slight touch of grumpiness. One of my favorite things about Dave was his ability to convey such a clear personality while making little to no sound. I often found myself staring into his eyes, wondering if there was ever anything on his mind. Because his presence in my childhood paralleled my musical journey, it was only natural that my relationship with him would influence aspects of my performances. As I perform this piece, I turn to his movements, his facial expressions, and his demeanor to help me illustrate a character without a single word. They say you can follow a rabbit towards the truth. In my dreams, I take that leap of faith and chase Dave into places I have never seen before.
